StuStaNet association
The StuStaNet is an association that operates in the Studentenstadt Freimann. Here it operates a computer network that connects the Studentenstadt to the Internet. At time of writing, the computer network is in use by approx. 2,000 users.
The StuStaNet created its own network in 1996 and operated it until 1999. As of Novemeber 1999, the StuStaNet together with the Studentenwerk München(Student council Munich) replaced the againg network piece by piece to a fully switched LAN. In 1997, gains access to the network of the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (LRZ). Initially, the Internet connection was a simple 64kBit connection, later a 768kBit connection over SDSL, and since mid-1999 by a LWL connection. This LWL connection initially operated with 10 MBit/s. In Dezemeber 2000 this was upgraded to a 100 MBit/s connection and in July 2007 to a 1 GBit/s connection.
The StuStaNet operates the Internet Router to the LRZ as well as all higher-level services such as DNS, Mailserver, HTTP Proxys, etc. The StuStaNet in co-operation with the Studentenwerk Munich provides all residents of the Studentenstadt with an Internet connection and also provides support for the residents regarding network issues. The StuStaNet also offers its members additional services, such as a VoIP gateway, a Web space and a mailbox.
Participation
If you want to do more than just surf the Internet the StuStaNet provides you the possibility of actively participating in the computer network, whether you want to administer one of the many servers we have, be a house administrator or even be part of the board of directors. Everyone interested in participating is welcome to join us at the monthly administrators' meeting.
Membership
Residents of the Studentenstadt Freimann who would like to join the association must fill out a membership application form, which they can obtain within our office hours in the 'Blue House'. This is where residents go to for more information regarding the StuStaNet association or for any problems they are experiencing with the LAN. Our office hours are posted in every house on the notice board.
